Challenge: A large health insurance provider’s talent acquisition department was struggling to find recruiters that the company’s hiring managers could work with, and rely on, to pinpoint the right talent for its various teams. Placements had stalled and morale was down. The San Francisco-based health care provider turned to WM for help.

WM’s Unique Solution: We listened. By asking the right questions, and paying close attention to the hiring managers’ answers, we were able to understand their pain. We determined the job opportunities weren’t being communicated clearly, and the candidates being identified weren’t a good match. Our focus became “one placement at a time,” with an emphasis on working hand-in-hand with each manager to find candidates that were the right fit for the company’s culture. Our in-depth screening process helped us uncover candidates who weren’t just qualified: they were exceptional. Slowly we built a team of contract recruiters who were leading the department.

Long-Term Result: The company’s managers brought us back to support other departments, including one of their largest departments, the call center. With the client’s input, we were able to develop and implement a program that took us from zero placements to more than 130. WM quickly grew to be their number one supplier.

Challenge: A public transportation agency in California faced a difficult situation. As a government entity, a strict 960-hour cap applied to each of the agency’s hires. Too many their preferred candidates weren’t interested in accepting temporary, contract positions. The agency was desperate to find qualified and committed candidates who were amenable to the mandated hours cap.

WM’s Unique Solution: We started by analyzing the details of each prospective opening. These included the types of positions that were needed, when the initial order for the exiting worker had been filled, and when that worker’s 6-month, 960-hour period was set to expire. By doing this, we were able to supply qualified candidates, with the right skillset and expertise, before the position re-opened. The client called it “being proactive”. At Wollborg/Michelson, we call it business as usual.

Long-Term Result: Our analysis paid off. We were able to fill orders at a brisk clip, placing more qualified, committed temporary workers than any other service. How careful were we about finding the right fit for the agency’s needs? If we presented two candidates for a single placement, they sometimes hired both. We went from being thought of as a “don’t call us, we’ll call you” vendor to being the recruiter this agency relied on to fill multiple positions. The relationship blossomed, and the agency invited WM to fill direct hire positions as well.

Challenge: An Oakland-based, non-profit office supply distributor that supports local communities was having trouble finding a Dream Candidate for its Assistant Controller position. Finding a prospect with the right qualifications was just part of the challenge. As a nonprofit, the pay the company was able to offer for the position fell below industry standards, and the organization’s East Bay office was considered undesirable by many of the top candidates.

WM’s Unique Solution: We were tenacious. The client was initially reluctant to give our team a chance based on previous experiences with recruiters, but our perseverance paid off. The key was understanding that the organization needed a consultant, not an order filler. They needed to talk through the position in order to identify their own needs. Through this dialogue, we were able to separate “must have” qualities from “nice to have” ones. We were able to establish a set of “soft skills” necessary for the candidate to thrive. Using these vital inputs, we structured a comprehensive search around candidates with the proper skillset and based in a geographic area convenient to the Oakland location.

Long-Term Result: We did more than fill this needle-in-a-haystack position in less than a month. We located a Dream Candidate who loves her job and was recently promoted to Controller. Our process has made the organization a big believer in WM’s approach. The company refers to us as its “secret weapon” and has vowed to call on Wollborg Michelson for any future openings in which the organization seeks to find the perfect match.
